Dive into the Shorebirds Competition For Years 3-6

Hold onto your lab goggles, because we've got an exciting opportunity for all our budding scientists out there!


This Term 3, get ready to dive into the Shorebirds Competition, a fantastic way for primary students in Years 3 to 6 to spread their wings and explore the 2024 National Science Week theme, ‘Species Survival’.


Hosted by ANSTO, the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, this competition offers a unique cross-curricular adventure. ANSTO isn’t just about science labs and test tubes – they operate some of Australia’s coolest infrastructure, including the ultra-modern OPAL nuclear research reactor and a suite of neutron beam instruments at the Australian Centre for Neutron Scattering.


Plus, they've got the Australian Synchrotron, the National Deuteration Facility, and the Centre for Accelerator Science.


So, if you're ready to combine your love of nature and science, the Shorebirds Competition is the perfect way to make a splash this National Science Week!

Science Day Extravaganza: Older Students Lead the Way in Fun Experiments!

Why not team up with another class for an epic Science Day that will leave everyone buzzing with excitement? 


Imagine older students leading the charge, showcasing a series of fantastic experiments to their younger peers, and showing just how thrilling science can be.


 Over the course of an hour, students can rotate through a variety of hands-on activities like the 


  • “Smartie Party,” where they discover how Smartie colours spread but don’t mix right away in water 
  • “Milky Rainbow,” which reveals the magic of surface tension with milk, food colouring, and detergent. 
  • “Mini Volcano” erupt with a fizz of vinegar, bicarb soda, detergent, and food colour, 
  • Witness an endothermic reaction with “A Chilly Recipe” featuring bicarb soda and citric acid. 
  • The “Lava Lamp” experiment mixes oil, water, food dye, and salt to show how oil and water just don’t get along.
  •  “Soap Boats” demonstrates water tension with some clever mini ‘boats’
  •  “Humpty Dumpty,” where students explore the surprising strength of eggshells
